Zircon has been involved in numerous high profile national and international rail projects. We have developed operational software, performed verification and validation tasks, and produced test equipment and engineering support tools for some of the most advanced rail systems in the world.
Zircon is entering its 2nd decade of working with Siemens Mobility Limited having worked for its previous incarnations, Westinghouse Signals Ltd and Invensys Rail, prior to its acquisition by Siemens.
As part of their focus on the rail sector, Siemens Mobility Limited continue to develop and maintain systems designed to ‘automate’ the control of the railway. Zircon has continuously supported Siemens’ product development and R&D programmes and have been a part of a number of the company’s high profile projects.
Our work includes safety, control centre and train carried systems, as well as the verification and validation of existing systems to ensure compliance with BS EN 50128 (to SIL2).
Without the experience of the Zircon staff involved the project would never have made the good early progress on this high profile contract. The staff have my personal thanks.

Balfour Beatty Rail provides a range of rail based solutions with a particular focus on their train carried measurement and maintenance systems.
Zircon has worked with Balfour Beatty’s measurement and monitoring division to deliver enhancements and updates to a number of their core products including software updates for both their real-time data acquisition system and their visualisation and analysis tool, DataMap™.
Network Rail are the UK authority responsible for running, maintaining and developing 20,000 miles of Britain’s railway track, as well as the majority of the bridges and tunnels, major railway stations, level crossings and signalling systems that are a part of this track.
Zircon has provided support services to Network Rail’s Signalling Innovation Group, undertaking routine maintenance and providing updates to a number of signalling design tools used throughout the signalling design process.
Transport for London is the government organisation responsible for most aspects of London’s transport services. London Underground is the part of Transport for London that controls the daily running, development and maintenance of London’s underground railway system.
Zircon have a long history of working with London Underground and have been involved in projects both directly for London Underground and through companies such as Siemens and Knorr-Bremse. Projects include supporting Siemens in the development of control centre software for the Central and Victoria Lines, provision of a track circuit monitoring user interface and development of platform screen door software with Knorr-Bremse.
GE Transport, now Alstom, provided customers with freight and passenger locomotives, as well as railway signalling and communication systems.
Zircon worked with GE Transportation in the UK to develop and implement software updates for legacy signalling system comms equipment.
Petards’ transport division provides customers with a wide range of high-tech products for on-board train video and sensing solutions, designed to increase passenger safety and satisfaction.
Zircon worked with Petards to develop software for their next generation of on-board CCTV system. Zircon developed software for all aspects of the system including digital video recording and playback, intelligent cameras, driver’s touchscreen interface and network configuration.
